Social Media Policy

My intention for social media is for it to be an empowering and free way to connect and learn from others. However, there are things to consider when using social media as a therapist. The information below outlines my policies related to the use of social media. This information is available to understand how I conduct myself on the Internet as a therapist and how you can expect me to respond to various interactions that may occur on-line. If you have any questions, please reach out to me by email (connect@jasminegarfield.com).

Friending and following

I do not accept friend or contact requests from current or former clients on any social networking site. Adding clients as friends or contacts on these sites can compromise your confidentiality and it may also blur the boundaries of our therapeutic relationship.

I have no expectation that you as a client will follow my Instagram account. In fact, the BCACC and CCPA Ethics Codes prohibit my soliciting testimonials from clients. As such, I make a practice to not engage in any comments regarding my services from current or former clients on this platform.

My Instagram account is public so you are welcome to use your own discretion in choosing whether to follow me. Please note that I will not follow you back to protect your confidentiality. I mainly follow other health professionals and organizations on Instagram and I do not follow current or former clients. If there are things from online that you wish to share with me, please bring them into our sessions where we can explore them together.

Interacting

Please do not use DMs as a way to contact me. These sites are not secure and I may not read these messages. Please do not use Wall postings, @replies, or other means of engaging with me online if we have an already established client/therapist relationship. Engaging with me this way could compromise your confidentiality. Also, if there were an emergency, I would not be able to respond in a timely manner as I do not check this account regularly. The best way to contact me between sessions is by email or phone.

Use of search engines

I do not “google” my clients or look up information on them for any reason. It is vital that you decide what I know about you.

Business Review Sites

You may find my private practice on review sites and other places which list businesses. Some of these sites include forums in which users rate their providers and add reviews. Many of these sites comb search engines for business listings and automatically add listings regardless of whether the business has added itself to the site. If you should find my listing on any of these sites, please know that my listing is NOT a request for a testimonial, rating, or endorsement from you as my client.
